Harper government withheld documents in indigenous human-rights case:

The Harper government withheld tens of thousands of documents that it was obligated to disclose as part of a human-rights case in which it is accused of discriminating against indigenous children. Now, it is using its failure to hand over the files to try to get the proceedings put on hold.

The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal in 2007 saying it is wrong for the federal government to pay 22 per cent less for child welfare on reserves than the provinces pay for non-aboriginal welfare services.

Despite many attempts by the government to have the case dismissed, the hearings before the tribunal finally began in February of this year.

But, next Tuesday, Justice Department lawyers will ask for an adjournment of many months while they gather more than 50,000 documents that were required to have already been handed over to the Caring Society’s lawyers under the human-rights commission rules.

Hey so when the federal government got caught illegally hiding 50,000 documents which it was required to turn over for what could potentially be a very large and expensive human rights case, they responded by insisting that they needed the whole proceeding adjourned for months while they collected all those documents.

That’s it. That’s exactly what happened. That’s just how things are now.

Dayton signs same-sex marriage law at outdoor ceremony:

Amid a cascade of cheers and applause, Gov. Mark Dayton legalized same-sex marriage in Minnesota on Tuesday surrounded by thousands of gay and lesbian supporters and advocates.

“By your political courage, you join that pantheon of exceptional leaders who did something extraordinary,” Dayton said. “You changed the course of history for our state and our nation.”

Dayton signed the marriage measure at a historic outdoor ceremony, a day after the Senate and House passed the proposal.

Minnesota will become the first Midwestern state to legalize same-sex marriage by legislative vote and the 12th state in the nation to recognize such unions. Dayton’s action technically repeals a state statute that had prohibited same-sex marriage.

Minnesota House to vote on same-sex marriage Thursday:

The Minnesota House will hold a final floor vote Thursday on a measure to legalize same-sex marriage, after weeks of behind-the-scenes lobbying at the Capitol

Although I believe the DFL wouldn’t bring this bill to a vote unless they were certain they have the votes to pass, it is expected to be very close. If the bill passes, the Minn. Senate is expected to take it up on Monday. Gov. Dayton (DFL) has also made it clear that he wants to sign this legislation.

there is a river that runs through white eagle, which is up by ponca city and the conoco plant is just down the road, and you can’t fish in it or anything. it is so polluted from the conoco plant. my husband, back when we were first together, he didn’t listen to us when we told him not to go in to the river and he jumped in it. he came out slick from all the oil in the water. it stayed on him like that for almost week regardless how much he showered. it was gross. the houses on the south side of ponca city that were close to the plant have been bought and removed because of all the black soot that place gives off. the company bought them all and paid the residents off to move. there are little kids who end up with cancer because of it all, you walk around barefoot and you end up with black feet.

she is fighting hard against the keystone xl pipeline too, as we all should be. this is going to happen and worse if we don’t.

The truth is that the age restriction is completely arbitrary, tied only to our puritanical comfort levels. And listen, I get it; I think it’s fair to say that most people are uncomfortable with the idea of a 14 year old having sex. But here’s the thing - access to Plan B isn’t about keeping a 14 year old from having sex - by the time she gets to the pharmacy, that ship has sailed - it’s about keeping a 14 year old who has already had sex from getting pregnant. And despite what urban legend (or past embarrassing FDA memos) may tell you, making emergency contraception more available is not more likely to make young teens have sex - it will just make them less likely to end up pregnant.

We can’t let our discomfort with teen sex trump young people’s right to sexual and reproductive health and we can’t continue to let politics trump science. If we care about young women’s health and bodily autonomy and integrity, we’ll drop all age restrictions from emergency contraception. Anything less isn’t just illogical - it’s immoral.
